Climate-Friendly School Trips Campaign
Take action for a greener future!
How can school trips be more sustainable? How does travel impact the climate? What can students and teachers do to make a difference? These are some of the key questions our campaign, Climate-Friendly School Trips, seeks to answer.
About the campaign
The campaign is part of the Travel Different for Future project, which empowers young people to travel more sustainably through interactive workshops developed and conducted with the help of young volunteers aged 18 to 30. The campaign provides students with ideas on how schools can rethink their travel choices, reduce their carbon footprint, offset CO₂ emissions from school trips, and engage both students and teachers in meaningful climate action.
How we can support you in running the campaign at your school
To make it easier, we have created an Action Guide that walks you through the campaign step-by-step. Additionally, we have designed six educational posters that you can place in different areas of your school to capture the attention of students, teachers, and even the principal, sparking conversations and engagement.
The Action Guide
The Action Guide is a comprehensive step-by-step resource designed to help schools introduce climate-friendly travel practices. It provides practical strategies for integrating sustainable travel principles into school policies, as well as discussing topics that encourage students to reflect on the environmental impact of travel. Additionally, the guide includes activity suggestions that empower both students and teachers to take action—whether by organising low-carbon school trips, advocating for more sustainable mobility options, or raising awareness within their community.
To further support schools in making informed decisions, the guide also offers resources and recommendations on mobility choices and carbon offsetting. By using this guide, schools can rethink travel habits, reduce emissions, and inspire students to become part of the solution.
Educational posters – A visual storytelling approach
To complement the Action Guide, we have developed six visually engaging educational posters that highlight the impact of tourism and transportation on the climate. Each poster presents a different aspect of climate-conscious travel, from aviation emissions to sustainable mobility, making complex topics more accessible and thought-provoking.
These posters are designed to capture attention and encourage engagement among students and teachers alike. Schools can display them in various locations—such as hallways, classrooms, and common areas—to create a visual journey that tells a compelling story. By placing them in different corners of the school, they can spark curiosity and conversation, ultimately fostering greater awareness and action toward more sustainable travel choices.
How to get involved?
First, download the Action Guide to get an initial sense of what is needed to start the campaign. Also share it with teachers, student representatives, or environmental clubs at your school to find supporters. For further steps, we recommend inspiring discussions by watching films and documentaries related to sustainable travel, which will help participants understand the key topics and strengthen your proposal.
Once you have gained interest from your peers and introduced the campaign to the school management, start spreading the word! Display the posters, engage in conversations, and encourage others to take action.
Don't give up
Achieving meaningful change is a long process, but every effort counts, and it all starts with a first step. Even if your effort isn’t immediately recognised, your initiative will raise awareness and encourage discussions about climate-friendly travel. More people will become familiar with the issue, and you’ll inspire conversations that may lead others to rethink their travel choices. By taking action, your class can set a positive example—whether by adopting sustainable travel practices or contributing to climate protection through offsetting, you have the power to make a difference.
You might even ask yourself, "Does this really have a big impact on the climate?". From a global perspective, one school’s actions may seem small, but they are still a measurable contribution. More importantly, it makes educational sense. After all, if everyone waits for others to act, nothing will change.
